Urumqi begins DNA test for riot victims

Urumqi: Families of the victims of the Xinjiang riots will get 200,000 yuan ($29,274) in an one-off compensation for each fatality and another 10,000 yuan ($1,464) as funeral allowances, the local government announced here Friday afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference, Wang Fengyun, director of Urumqi's Bureau of Civil Affairs, said the first 50 million yuan ($7.32 million) compensation fund has already been put into place.

She said the municipal government has arranged more than 300 staff members for the reception of the victims’ families, so that they ccould be accompanied by at least two staff members.

The city's Bureau of Public Security has started DNA identification for the victims, she added.

At least 156 people died and more than 1,000 were wounded in the July 5 riot.
