Man shot dead in west China city

CHONGQING - A man was shot dead early Wednesday at the entrance of a residential compound in downtown Chongqing, southwest China, said a city police spokesman.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the main gate of Aidingbao Residence, in Jiangbei District.  The victim was believed to be aged 44, but police gave no other details.

Some residents in the compound reported hearing two gunshots, but nobody could say how the violence started.

Bullet holes were visible in the windscreen of a parked white Citroen hatchback near the entrance of the compound. Blood stains on the ground appeared to have been washed away.

The site of the shooting was cordoned off.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Chinese law prohibits the private ownership of guns.
