New flu case in Shanghai

Also on Friday, Shanghai reported its fourth confirmed case, that of a 33-year-old stewardess who had been on flight CA178, said Chen Qiwei, a spokesman for the municipal government.

The plane from Melbourne to Shanghai landed on May 23.

Shanghai’s first confirmed case was also on the plane.

The stewardess had been put under medical observation and was found to have a fever on May 28.

As of 4 pm Friday, the number of confirmed A(H1N1) cases rose to 21 on the Chinese mainland, including new confirmed cases reported in Guangdong, Shanghai and Fujian, the ministry said.

Of them, seven patients have been discharged from hospital after successful treatment and the remaining 14 were all in stable condition.

In addition, 21 students and three teachers from a private school in Maryland, USA, have been placed in quarantine in a hotel in the southwestern Guizhou province, said Richard Buangan, a spokesman for the US Embassy in Beijing.

Huang Jinqi, director of the health bureau in the city of Kaili, where the group is being held, said they are all in normal condition and would be released soon.

She said they were taken into quarantine Wednesday evening because they had taken a flight from the US to Hong Kong along with a passenger who later tested positive for the virus.
