One dead, 8 missing after a boat collided with a ship

HANGZHOU -- One person was confirmed dead and eight others remained missing after their fishing boat collided with a ship and sank near the Yangtze River estuary in Shanghai early Monday, maritime authorities confirmed.

All 11 people on board the fishing boat, coded 04637 from the eastern Zhejiang Province, fell into the water after it capsized and sank at about 3:40 am, the provincial maritime bureau said.

Three people were rescued at about 4:10 a.m, but one died from serious injuries. The search for the missing continued as of noon.

At least 30 rescue vessels and a helicopter have joined the rescue operation.

Maritime authorities were investigating the cause of the accident and pursuing the other vessel, which fled after the accident.
