Suspect in police custody falls to death at hotel

GUANGZHOU -- A murder suspect who was in police custody fell to his death from a hotel building in south China's Guangdong Province on Thursday, local police said.

The man, 43, whose surname was given as Ren, was seen falling from the building at Guangyuandonglu Road in Guangzhou City at 7 am, police with Tianhe branch of Guangzhou Municipal Police Station said.

Ren died at the scene.

A native of the central Hubei Province, Ren was being escorted through Guangzhou at the time, but the city was not their destination, police said.

But police declined to say whether Ren was staying in the hotel or how he came to fall to his death.

Police gave no further details on the incident.
