One landslide, which occurred at 11:40 am Sunday in Linfeng Township, was the result of unsafe quarry production. The other landslide at 12:40 pm in Zhaxi Township resulted from continuous heavy rainfalls over three to four days, according to Tang Guoqian, head of the publicity department of Weixin County, which administers the two townships.

By 9 am Monday, 11 people were confirmed dead, 15 others were still missing and two more were injured.

The injured are hospitalized and in stable condition.

Rescuers are still searching for the missing, said Tang, adding that there was little hope of finding them alive.
