WELLINGTON -- A Chinese female student died in a car accident on Friday in New Zealand's North Island, the Chinese embassy confirmed on Saturday.

The accident occurred at about 11:45 am Firday (23:45 GMT Thursday) on a stretch of State Highway 1 called the Taihape Deviation. The dead Chinese girl, 19, was studying at Massy University in Palmerstone North.

She was traveling with two other Chinese students when their vehicle collided with another car, police said. One Chinese student was also injured but in stable condition.

"Initial inquiries suggest that the vehicle that the deceased was in failed to give way at an intersection," Police Inspector Marty Parker said.

Police inquiries are continuing.
