A taxi driver in Shanghai managed to free himself from four robbers by jumping into a river.

A man asked Yang to drive him to a city in Jiangsu province on March 24 and promised to pay 700 yuan for the long, two-hour trip.

The man claimed he had only 500 yuan in his pocket and asked Yang to drive near a bridge so he could ask his friend for another 200 yuan but the passenger's friends were waiting to rob the driver.

They stole 600 yuan in cash, a bankcard and a cell phone. They used a shoestring to tie him up.

Yang got loose from the string and jumped into the river below. Police captured three of the four robbers on April 14. They are gamblers with big debts.
