CHENGDU -- Five miners were trapped underground after a Sunday evening coal mine flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province, local authorities said Monday.

The accident happened at about 7:20 pm at Furong Village Coal Mine in  Gaoxian County as 33 miners were working underground, a provincial work safety bureau official said. An investigation into the cause is under way.

The official said 28 miners escaped safely. Rescuers were still looking for the five trapped underground, he said.

The licensed, private mine has a production capacity of 60,000 tonnes.
