Pile-up kills 9, injures over 20 in east China

HEFEI -- A pile-up killed nine and injured at least 20 people on the Beijing-Taibei expressway in east China's Anhui Province on Wednesday, police said.

The accident happened at 8:20 a.m.. More than ten vehicles crashed together, including three buses, several min-buses and cars, police said.

One of the cars was buried under a truck. Four people in the car died at the scene.

Nearly 100 people were stranded in the damaged vehicles and the pile-up covered several kilometers, police said. The traffic resumed at 10:30 a.m..

The investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

Beijing-Taibei Expressway is a highway planned to connect Beijing and the capital of Taiwan. The section from Beijing to Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province has been completed.
