Fire kills 6, injures 2 in east China's Zhejiang

HANGZHOU  -- Six people were killed and another two injured Friday night in an apartment fire in east China's Zhejiang Province, local police said on Saturday.

The fire broke out at 9:40 p.m. on the first floor and spread throughout the five-story building which is located in the Taiping township of Wenling City, firefighters said. The fire was extinguished at 11:40 p.m.

Four women and two men died. The two injured were still being treated in the hospital, according to the information office of Wenling.

Police evacuated more than 10 residents from the building. The government is putting them up temporarily in a hotel as their homes were destroyed.

Police and the work safety watchdog were investigating the cause of the fire.
