BEIJING - China's top legislator Wu Bangguo on Tuesday hailed the success of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's parliament, saying it will help mobilize Chinese people to work for the building of a moderately prosperous society.

Nearly 3,000 deputies throughout the country attended the First session of the 11th NPC, starting March 5 through March 18. During the meeting, the deputies endorsed the report of government work delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao, along with other reports, and set forth the major tasks and work plans for this year and the five years to come.

They also endorsed the new leadership of the country, with Hu Jintao reelected state president, Wu Bangguo reelected chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and Wen Jiabao reappointed premier of the State Council, or cabinet.

A new NPC Standing Committee and line-up of ministers of the State Council were also approved at the parliament session.

"All this has provided a solid foundation for the realization of the development targets," said Wu.

On the work of the NPC and its Standing Committee in the past five years, Wu said that a set of effective work mechanisms and measures had been formed, which resulted in evident progress in legislation, and active exchanges with parliaments of other countries.

In the coming five-year tenure, Wu said he would work hard with his colleagues to continue enhancing and improving legislation, loosing no time to make major laws to support the country's law system while amending laws and regulations that are no longer suitable to China's economic and social development.

"The NPC and its Standing Committee will continue to enhance and improve supervision, maintain social fairness and justice and bring into better play the role of the people's congress in supervising government work and promote governance according to law," he said.

"We will improve service so that NPC deputies can better participate in state affairs," he added.

The NPC Standing Committee will function under set procedures in accordance with the law and place it under public supervision, Wu said.
