A repentant fugitive sought media help to surrender after 12 years of sleepless nights.

Li, 34, allegedly stabbed a neighbor to death in a fight in Jinxian country, Nanchang, Jiangxi province, in 1996.

He fled to Shenzhen, Guangdong province, where he worked under the table and lived in fear of the death penalty.

Inspired by news in which media helped a criminal out of a similar dilemma after years on the run, Li decided to contact the South Metropolis Daily to end his 12-year nightmare.

He expressed his gratefulness to reporters after they accompanied him to police.
