12 dead in east China elevator fall

XIAPU -- Twelve construction workers died after the elevator they rode fell at a construction site in east China's Fujian Province on Thursday.

The accident occurred at around 6:40 a.m. at a construction site in Xincheng District, Xiapu County. All the 12 on the elevator died after it fell.

The dead included nine from eastern Jiangxi Province, one from southwestern Sichuan and two locals of Xiapu.

Lin Jian, deputy magistrate of Xiapu, said at a news briefing on Thursday evening that three labor contractors at the project had been held by investigators.

All the construction sites in the county had been ordered to stop work for safety improvement.

The cause of the accident was still being investigated.
