URUMQI -- Two people were killed and 20 others were injured in a road accident in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late on Saturday, local police confirmed on Sunday.

A van with 23 people on board, including the driver, fell into a gully at a section in the Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County of Xinjiang, when it drove at a bend at about 8:30 pm.

Brake failure was blamed for the cause of the accident.

All the injured, including six seriously wounded, were hospitalized. Fate of the driver was not immediately known.

Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County is about 700 km away from Urumqi, the regional capital.
