KUNMING - A woman and her 10-month-old baby drowned in a river after receiving 300 yuan (US$42) in alleged fake notes at a market in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The woman, surnamed Peng, dived into the Panlong River with her baby in her arms on Monday after receiving the fake notes at a vegetable market in Kunming City, the local Shenghuoxinbao newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Peng vehemently argued with a chicken vendor that he had swapped her money for fake notes when she was making a purchase on Monday morning. The vendor insisted her 100-yuan notes were fake.

Peng then burned the fake notes in a stove after returning home. Along with her baby, the two then disappeared from her family's view.

The two bodies were found by fire fighters around 9 p.m.
