10 missing after ferry sinks near Shanghai

SHANGHAI -- Ten people are missing after an illegal ferry with 22 on board capsized and sank after colliding with the cable of an anchored vessel in thick fog near Shanghai, rescuers said on Friday.

The steel ferry from Changxing Island, capsized around 2:30 pm on Friday at Wusong pier and sank instantly, according to the Shanghai maritime authorities.

Twenty-two people - two sailors and 20 passengers - were on board when it capsized.

Twelve have been rescued but ten others are still missing.

The Shanghai Maritime Bureau and the East China Sea Rescue Bureau are organizing the search and rescue operation.
