Many people who go through divorce procedure in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, feel embarrassed because they are required to read a declaration.

Li, a local woman who got divorced last week, said reading the declaration was torture as it made her very sad.

However, officials in the local civil affairs department said the declaration was mandatory nationwide.

It was to remind people that marriage should be taken seriously and to curb the number of divorce cases.
