HANGZHOU-- Five people were killed after a Ferrari car veered off the road and plunged into a river on Wednesday in East China's Zhejiang Province, where Typhoon Wipha was playing havoc, local police said on Thursday.

Local residents found the car side-turned in a river on Wednesday morning, when high water level caused by downpour had fallen back.

The five people were found dead in the car when the police used a crane to lift up the car from the river, according  to the police.

Wipha, believed the most destructive typhoon in a decade, made landfall in Zhejiang Province on Wednesday morning.

Zhejiang has been among the several coastal regions where typhoon Wipha has pummeled. A total of 1.59 million people have been relocated, the largest mass relocation in the province since 1949.
