A runaway driver who was held responsible for a fatal truck-tractor collision that killed 11 people and injured 12 others has surrendered to police, said authorities in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on Tuesday.

Jin Wenhua had fled the site after his truck hit a tractor at around 7:20 am on Sunday in Zhongning County in the city of Zhongwei, killing five on the spot, said the county's police authorities.

Six others died on their way to the hospital.

Jin, a native of Zhongning County, called his family at lunchtime on Monday from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region where he was hiding, and was persuaded to surrender himself to police.

He was brought back to his home county on Monday night.

The 12 injured villagers are out of danger thanks to adequate treatment, according to Ma Denghai, president of the Tongxin County Hospital.
