BEIJING -- The body of a missing Australian climber has been found on a mountain in southwest China, the official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.

The man, named as Andrew Clem Lindenmayer, went missing in May in Sichuan province where he had gone to climb Mount Gongga, the report said. Villagers found his body on July 19, it added.

Last month, rescuers searching for him found a body believed to be that of a Japanese mountaineer who vanished 26 years ago.

Gongga -- Tibetan for "highest snow-capped mountain" -- has more than 20 peaks above 6,000 metres, the highest at 7,556 metres.

On Monday, state media said the body of an American woman climber had been found on a remote mountain eight months after she disappeared.
