KUNMING -- The death toll in Sunday's truck accident in southwest China's Yunnan Province has risen to 13, and 55 others were injured, the local government said on Monday.

A truck stuffed with 71 villagers overturned at 8:20 a.m. Sunday in Kafang township of Gejiu city in Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Honghe, killing 11 people on the spot. Two others died later at hospital, the publicity department of Gejiu city said.

Five passengers were seriously injured and were under emergency treatment at Gejiu Hospital and the No. 3 People's Hospital in Honghe.

The villagers were on their way to a market in Kafang township, some 15 kilometers from their home village of Baohe.

A traffic police officer said the truck "overturned while trying to mount a pavement", but did not give details.

Investigation into the accident is still going on.
