11 dead, 9 missing in landslide in SW China

CHENGDU -- Eleven people were killed and nine are still missing in floods and landslides triggered by rainstorms in southwest China, local government sources said.

Rainstorms hit Ganzi and Liangshan autonomous prefectures in Sichuan Province early Thursday, triggering mud flows and flash floods, said a spokesman of the Sichuan provincial government.

Eleven were killed, one is missing and five others injured after a mud slide in Heba village of Ganzi, the spokesman said. Four were washed away and are missing in Huidong County of Liangshan.

A landslide which occurred in Pengshui county of Chongqing Municipality Thursday morning also left three injured and four missing, local government said.

Local governments are organizing search efforts for the missing.
