ADDIS ABABA -- A model technical and vocational training college, constructed in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa by the Chinese government at a cost of about 9 million US dollars, is to begin service soon, the Ministry of Education said Wednesday.

State Minister of Education Wondwosen Kiflu told journalists that the college under construction will receive trainees as of the coming academic year.

The state minister said the new college, under construction with the support of the Chinese government, will have the capacity to enroll 3,000 students at a time.

The 14-block college, built on over 11.7 hectares of land, comprises sports fields and other student facilities, Wondwosen said.

The establishment of the college will help Ethiopian to exploit the rich experience of China in the industrial sector, he said, adding that the college will focus on training students mainly in construction, leather and textile sector.

The Ethiopian government has been reviewing the technical and vocational training strategy during the last two years in a bid to make the country competent in the industry sector, Wondwosen said.

The ministry envisages incorporating up-to-date technologies into the national curricula to enhance the competitiveness of the nation at international level, he said.

Hence, the state minister said the overhauling of the curricula has already been carried out in the construction sector.
