A Brief Introduction to Dujiangyan City

Located on the northwest edge of Chengdu Plain, Dujiangyan city, named after the world famous irrigation system-Dujiangyan, is renowned as the "Origin of Abundant Land".

Dujiangyan is rich in both natural and cultural resources holding a world cultural heritage site-Mount Qingcheng & Dujiangyan Irrigation System and a National Nature Reserve-Longxi & Hongkou within its border.

Having 19 townships and 1 Hi-tech zone under its jurisdiction, Dujiangyan covers area of 1207 km2 with a population of 630,000. The city proper of Dujiangyan is settled back against mountains with 5 rivers flowing through the city proper, and a verdant mountain-Yulei standing in the middle. In all, Dujiangyan is a city housing mountains, rivers, forests, weirs, bridges and city buildings together coordinately.

Dujiangyan is a brilliant city in Southwest China, and was awarded with many famous titles, such as China's Top Tourist City, Key National Park, National Model Ecological Area, National Hygienic City, National Historic and Cultural City, National Landscape City, City with Advanced Culture, National Award for Best Living Environment, Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve Living Environment, and The Most Glamorous City of China.

In recent years, Dujiangyan government has set the strategic goal of "Create best environment for living and business incubating; Build a economic strong city of West China as well as robust cultural city nationwide". The process of development witnessed the rapid growth of economy and all-round development of the society. Dujiangyan city now ranks the top ten counties (cities) of Sichuan Province in terms of comprehensive economic power with the GDP of more than 8.369 billion RMB yuan and the local revenue of over 618 million RMB yuan in year 2005.

Dujiangyan is one of the key foreign trade cities approved by Sichuan Provincial Government. And now it houses three industrial parks, the Sichuan Scientific and Technological Development Zone, the Sichuan & Jiangsu Cooperative Industrial Park and a Software Incubation Center on the foot of Mount Qingcheng. With sound infrastructure facilities, and fine industrial base, a new-type industrial chains has taken shape featuring by machinery, electronics, bio-pharmaceutical and environmental friendly material industries.

Dujiangyan city is rich in kinds of resources, and attractive with spectacular landscapes. These characteristics are mainly embodied in the following three aspects: firstly, the city is full of historical sites, especially the most famous ancient irrigation system that is over 2000 years old and still functions today, and the birth place of Taoism-Mount Qingcheng, now they have been inscribed into the World Heritage List; secondly, the city has excellent eco-environment housing more than 14000 species of higher animals and plants including some rare and endangered species, such as giant panda, golden monkey, and dove tree. Furthermore it is renowned as "World Natural Botanic Garden", "Gene Base of Rare Wild Animals" and one of major five biodiversity bases defined by CAS; thirdly, the city has the best living environment. The forest coverage of the city has reached 59.59%, and the greenbelt coverage of the city proper is 33%, thus the quality of air and water maintains the state highest standard all the year around. Due to these factors local people's living expectancy here is 77.1 years, which is 5.7 years above the national average, winning the city the title of "Longevity Land" granted by Sichuan Provincial Government.

In addition, local festivals such as Water Releasing Festival in April 5th every year, Longevity Cultural Festival and Taoist Culture Festival, which are famous both at home and abroad, add colors to the charm of the city.
