BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed slightly higher on the first trading day of November with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.37 percent, or 7.95 points, to finish at 2,149.56.

The Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.09 percent, or 7.32 points, to finish at 8,451.72.
