The Red Detachment of Women

The Central Ballet of China is to feature the red, revolutionary ballet, originally created as the first Chinese ballet in the 1960s.

The ballet depicts the growth of a group of slaves turned female soldiers who were oppressed by landlords in Hainan Island during the Second Civil War (1927-1937). While it is amusing to see slim women dance on their toes while carrying guns and clad in green uniforms, it is a good chance to peep into those revolutionary years in Chinese history.

Movie

From Italy

La Strada (The Road), directed in 1954 by Frederico Fellini, starring Giulietta Masina (Gelsomina), Anthony Quinn (Zampano) and Richard Baseheart (The Fool).

The director says this film is not of neo-realism, but it certainly has that look - a linear-time narrative in gritty black and white whose itinerant characters exist in a world of squalor and fatal consequence. It starts with the female protagonist sold by her mother to Zampano for 10,000 lira as a replacement for her sister Rosa who has died under unexplained circumstances. She is to be the man's assistant, slave and bogus wife.

In Italian with Chinese subtitles.

A freshversion of the famous novel Bailu Yuan by Chen Zhongshi will be displayed at the National Museum of Chinese Modern Literature.

The new version was produced by local artist Li Xiaochao who, with large-sized pottery sculptures, vividly portrays a panorama of the vicissitudes of peasants' life on the Loess Plateau in Shaanxi Province in the novel. Li spent three years combing through the province in an attempt to chart disappearing scenes in villages almost half a century ago.

More than 3,000 pottery products described in 88 scenes in the novel are reproduced.

Soul of India

Bronze ware from ancient India will be shown for the first time at China Millennium Altar on the second stop of a three-month tour of China.

As one of the four ancient civilizations in human history, ancient India was a land of mythology. And bronze making has a long history dating back to the period of the Indus Civilization, about 2500-1500 BC.

A total of 80 invaluable unearthed bronzes will be displayed. Most of them belonged to the ancient Pala Dynasty (750-1150) in north India and the Chola Dynasty (846-1279) in south India.

Some 15 excavated bronze items are believed to be evidence of time-honoured cultural exchanges between India and China. Links were established by the famous Chinese monk Hieun Tsang (602-664) who studied in the Nalanda monastery for five years around 632.
