China's air cargo traffic volume declined 28 percent year-on-year in February due to the deepening global economic crisis, Li Jiaxiang, director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), said on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

The country's domestic passenger air traffic grew 13.47 percent year-on-year in February while passenger traffic on international routes fell 16 percent, Li was quoted by China Securities Journal as saying.

He said China's total passenger traffic growth for 2009 is expected to exceed 8 percent.

Li said the CAAC encourages consolidation in the airline industry.
