China is planning to increase retail fuel consumption tax staring from January 1, 2009, country's top economic planner National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Friday, a major step towards a market-based oil pricing mechanism.

The retail fuel consumption tax for the gasoline will increase from 0.20 yuan per liter to 1 yuan per liter while diesel consumption tax will increase to 0.80 yuan per liter from the current 0.1 yuan, according to a plan issued by NDRC and other ministries.

The plan is issued to solicit public feedback, which will end December 12.
