Auto: BMW sales up 42% in China

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world's largest maker of luxury cars, said 2007 sales in China jumped 42 percent as economic growth spurred demand.

BMW sold 51,588 vehicles including 49,388 BMWs and 2,200 Mini-brand cars in Chinese mainland last year, BMW said.

Increasing personal wealth is boosting sales of luxury cars for BMW, Volkswagen AG's Audi brand and Toyota Motor Corp's Lexus. The Munich-based company plans to raise capacity at its China plant 45 percent to an annual 44,000 units in the next few months, the company said.

Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd in Shenyang makes 3-Series and 5-Series sedans in northeastern China.
