Shanghai index climbs, 04/09

China's main stock index hit a record high for the sixth straight day yesterday, rising 2.27 percent as bank stocks bounced after Friday's weakness and life insurers soared.

The Shanghai Composite Index ended at 3,398.950 points, less than a point off a new all-time high hit earlier in the day. Turnover in Shanghai A shares swelled to 139.3 billion yuan, the third highest level ever, from Friday's 121.4 billion yuan.
