Beijing sees 210,000 Olympic volunteers

Over 210,000 people in Beijing have been registered to offer voluntary services for the 2008 Olympic Games in the past month, according to official statistics.

The Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG) said at a press release that the number of volunteer applicants totaled 210,915 by September 28, exactly one month after the recruitment program was launched.

In addition, over 680,000 hotline calls and face-to-face inquiries have been recorded in the period. Universities and colleges received 529,167 inquirers compared to a total of 644,820 citywide. Inquiries outside the campus stood at 115,653 and hotline calls reached 36,248.

Among the volunteer applicants, 157,486 came from universities and colleges, accounting for 74.7 percent, BOCOG said.

The age group of 16-25 accounted for 76 percent of the 52,143 online applicants, with females covering 61 percent of the total.

About 70,000 Games-time volunteers will be needed for the 2008 Olympic Games and 30,000 for the Paralympic Games.
