Nigeria eyes new seafood trade opportunities with China
Nigeria is preparing to launch seafood exports to China following the signing of a landmark inspection and quarantine protocol that opens the Chinese market to Nigerian wild aquatic products.
Vincent Isegbe, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, said the agreement covers wild-caught shrimp, crab, marine fish and other aquatic products.
He noted that their extensive experience exporting seafood to regulated markets such as the European Union and the United States, gives the country a strong foundation to meet China's sanitary and quarantine requirements.
Isegbe highlighted China's support for capacity building, adding that Nigerian quarantine officials have benefited from training programs, with four officers currently undergoing training in China, as the two countries deepen agricultural and trade cooperation.
