A new generation of Shanxi's cute cultural creative product, or "travel buddy", has unexpectedly gone viral. During the 2026 National Day holiday, tourists took "Buddha Buddy" to cultural landmarks across Shanxi, documenting their trips in innovative ways.

Inspired by stone statues at the Yungang Grottoes, a World Cultural Heritage site, in Datong, Shanxi province, "Buddha Buddy" draws on the profound stone-carving culture of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) and has risen to fame for its adorable appearance. Through this trendy and fun approach, young people bring history and culture alive through their journeys.
