Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed began a new five-year term with a pledge to advance economic development, strengthen national stability, and deepen regional cooperation.

Abiy was sworn in on Monday after the House of Peoples' Representatives formally appointed him prime minister during the inaugural session of its seventh tenure, completing the constitutional process following the June 1 general election.

In his acceptance speech, Abiy outlined an agenda centred on sustaining socioeconomic development, strengthening national security and stability, and promoting national reconciliation.

He also highlighted macroeconomic stability, green development, digital transformation, and integrated urban development as priorities for the next five years.

Calling for citizens to work together toward Ethiopia's "national rejuvenation", Abiy said the country must pursue policies that serve its national interests amid rapid global changes.

His renewed mandate has drawn messages of support from neighbouring countries, with leaders emphasizing peace, stability, and economic cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

Kenyan President William Ruto congratulated Abiy, describing the renewed mandate as a vote of confidence in his leadership and expressing readiness to continue cooperation between Kenya and Ethiopia.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that he looks forward to working with Abiy to strengthen bilateral relations and advance peace and shared prosperity in the Horn of Africa.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye also wished Abiy success and pledged cooperation on regional stability and shared economic development.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said Ethiopia holds a special place in Africa as the host of the continental body's headquarters and expressed readiness to work with the new government on integration, peace, security, and development.

Abiy's second term comes as Ethiopia seeks to consolidate economic reforms while addressing security challenges and strengthening its role in regional affairs.
