Xi to pay tribute to national heroes on Martyrs' Day

President Xi Jinping and other Party and State leaders will present flower baskets to fallen national heroes at Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing on Wednesday morning to mark the country's Martyrs' Day.

The leaders will be joined by representatives from all walks of life at the ceremony, which will be broadcast live by the China Media Group.

In 2014, China's top legislature adopted the decision to establish Martyrs' Day. Observed on Sept 30, one day before National Day, the day commemorates those who gave their lives for national independence and prosperity.

Since the first Martyrs' Day, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has maintained the tradition of paying homage to fallen heroes on the day.

This year marks the 77th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the 105th founding anniversary of the CPC. It also marks the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March, which lasted from 1934 to 1936.

Li urges stronger safety measures to prevent major accidents

Premier Li Qiang urged efforts on Monday to prevent major and serious workplace accidents, protect people's lives and property, and maintain social stability.

Speaking at a national teleconference on workplace safety convened by the State Council, China's Cabinet, Li stressed putting people and their lives first, strengthening accountability and ensuring safety measures are thoroughly implemented.

Li called for focusing on high-risk situations and key industries and sectors, improving the effectiveness of hazard identification and rectification, as well as tightening workplace safety oversight and law enforcement.

He also urged stronger disaster prevention, mitigation and relief efforts to minimize disaster-related losses.

Meeting calls for greater countercyclical policy support

Premier Li Qiang chaired a State Council executive meeting on Monday to discuss improving macroeconomic policy effectiveness and promoting effective investment.

The meeting stressed the need to step up countercyclical adjustments in macroeconomic policy to meet annual economic and social development targets.

It said that existing policy measures should be implemented more effectively, and the issuance and use of various types of bonds should be accelerated.

It also called for further developing policy measures to boost domestic demand, stabilize the property market, and promote employment and income growth.
