China says AI dialogue with US helps promote global AI development for good

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday that communication between China and the United States through intergovernmental dialogue on artificial intelligence is an important way to promote the development of AI for the benefit of all.

Guo made the remarks when asked about the recent agreement between the two countries to establish an AI dialogue to exchange views on AI-related risks and benefits, one of the outcomes of the China-US summit.

The question also concerned whether the bilateral mechanism reflected a shift in China's approach to global AI governance and whether it would provide a sufficient framework for addressing global challenges in the field.

"China has always taken a constructive and responsible approach to global AI governance and has consistently contributed Chinese proposals," Guo told reporters at a regular news briefing in Beijing.

He said China has consistently advocated supporting the United Nations' role as the main channel for building a fair and equitable global AI governance system.

"At the same time, we are willing to maintain communication and exchanges with the US through channels such as intergovernmental dialogue on AI," Guo said.

"This is both an important way to promote the development of AI for good and for the benefit of all globally, and an integral part of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity," he said.
