China, Indonesia seek stronger cooperation in emerging sectors

China is ready to work with Indonesia to upgrade bilateral cooperation and explore opportunities in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, biopharmaceuticals and information technology, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, chairman of Indonesia's National Economic Council.

China and Indonesia, as major countries and leading emerging economies, should deepen strategic communication and cooperation, Wang said, noting that closer ties serve the interests of both people and carry significance beyond the bilateral relationship.

Wang noted that bilateral cooperation has a solid foundation and promising prospects. He called on the two countries to better align their development strategies and build on existing cooperation in energy and mineral resources, infrastructure and industrial parks, while strengthening educational exchanges and talent development.

Wang described Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's decision to have Indonesia join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization as a wise choice, saying China is ready to work with Indonesia to promote AI for good and advance its inclusive development.

China is also willing to help Indonesia strengthen its capacity for independent development and accelerate its modernization. Wang expressed hope that Indonesia would create a sound environment and provide strong policy support for the long-term and stable operations of Chinese companies in the country.

He also voiced hope that the National Economic Council would continue to make new contributions to bilateral relations, particularly to mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

China welcomes Indonesia's efforts to accelerate its development and revitalization and is ready to work with the country to advance unity and self-strengthening of the Global South, he said. The two countries should play their role as major developing nations in making the global governance system fairer and more equitable, he added.

Luhut said Indonesia attaches great importance to its relations with China, describing China as the country's most reliable and enduring strategic partner in its development process.

Indonesia hopes to draw on China's successful experience in implementing its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) and strengthen cooperation in strategic emerging industries, including AI, biotechnology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing and digital finance, as well as in mining and talent development, Luhut said.

Indonesia is also ready to explore joint production, research and development, and innovation with China, he added.
