China raises visa fees for Japanese citizens on reciprocal basis

China will raise visa fees for Japanese citizens on a reciprocal basis, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Friday.

"The Chinese embassy in Japan has issued a notice. The adjustment was made in accordance with the principle of reciprocity," Mao told a regular news briefing.

According to the embassy's notice, the new fees will take effect on Monday. A single-entry visa will cost 16,750 yen ($104), while double-entry, six-month multiple-entry and one-year multiple-entry visas will cost 25,100 yen, 33,500 yen and 50,250 yen, respectively.

The adjustment came after the Japanese government approved a fivefold increase in visa fees for foreign nationals at a Cabinet meeting on June 19. From July 1, Japan raised the fee for a single-entry visa from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, and the fee for a multiple-entry visa from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.
