LONDON -- Over 1,000 flights were cancelled in Britain on Tuesday due to a technical failure at the country's air traffic control services.

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said in the afternoon that it identified a technical issue with its flight processing system, disrupting departures across the country and causing delays and cancellations.

Major British airports, including Heathrow Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Manchester Airport, were affected, according to data by Sweden-based flight tracking service Flightradar24.

An analysis of data from the website by local media showed over 1,000 flights had been cancelled at airports across the country by Tuesday night.

NATS said they had implemented a fix but recovery had taken longer than expected.

"Our system issue is now resolved," it said. "We are operating normally and working as hard as possible to clear the backlog of flights."
