Heavy-duty trucks get faster charging as services upgraded in Zhejiang

The heavy-duty truck charging station in Shangbo township, Huzhou, Zhejiang province was put into operation on Sept 3. The site is equipped with eight 400 kilowatt dual-gun high-power charging units, capable of serving 16 new-energy heavy trucks simultaneously. For truck drivers, the once-lingering "range anxiety" is now a thing of the past.

At noon, a new-energy heavy-duty truck pulled into the station from National Highway 104. As the charging connector locked in, the vehicle began drawing full rated power.

"When you are running electric trucks for logistics, the biggest worry is having no charging stations along the route," said Chen Hui, a driver who was charging at the site. "This station sits right in the middle of the Hangzhou-Huzhou freight corridor, so it is perfect for a quick top-up. In just one hour, you are fully charged and back on the road — no more detours hunting for a plug."

Heavy-duty truck charging infrastructure demands large installed capacity, high instantaneous power draw, and significant load fluctuation, placing considerable strain on grid carrying capacity. State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company has rolled out an integrated service model combining forward-looking grid planning, end-to-end permit acceleration, and routine extended reliability assurance — delivering faster grid connection, shorter application timelines, and higher service quality.

Working with development and reform, transport, and urban planning authorities, the company has established an information-sharing and joint-consultation mechanism to pinpoint charging-station deployment plans with precision.

Through measures such as adding new distribution lines, offloading in key zones, and upgrading aging feeders, grid headroom has been expanded and adequate connection capacity reserved for truck-charging sites.

At the same time, to tackle the long-standing pain points of cumbersome applications and drawn-out approvals, the company set "fewer steps, tighter deadlines, lower costs" as its targets — consolidating operations, marketing, and dispatch functions into a joint service team, and running customer on-boarding in parallel with administrative approvals. This streamlined on-site surveys, scheme design, permit responses, and meter installation into a single accelerated workflow, sharply cutting the pre-construction lead time and getting projects online faster.

Liang Xiaowen, a technician at the Wukang Power Supply Substation under State Grid Huzhou, noted: "Getting the power on is only half the job — keeping it stable over the long haul is what really matters. Truck-charging stations are sensitive to power quality. During peak charging windows when equipment runs at full load, we watch closely for overheating and line overload risks. We have built a live monitoring ledger for each site and run routine electrical-safety inspections and line patrols to keep the stations running safe and steady."

From "detouring to find a charger" to "rolling out fully charged", a green charging network spanning highway service areas, logistics parks, and national and provincial trunk routes is taking shape at accelerating speed. State Grid Huzhou Power Supply Company will keep raising the bar on power-service delivery, empowering the high-quality development of the green-transport industry.
