China rejects unilateral tariffs, urges dialogue on trade issues

China reiterated on Monday that it does not deliberately pursue a trade surplus and opposes unilateral tariff measures in all forms, after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he would urge G20 members to reassess their trade terms with China in an effort to ease global economic imbalances.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular news briefing that the China-United States economic and trade relationship is mutually beneficial and win-win in nature.

China remains committed to high-standard opening-up and will continue to provide new opportunities for all parties, including the US, through its vast market, Guo said.

He called on China and the US to jointly implement the important consensus reached by their heads of state and resolve relevant issues through consultation on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit.

The two sides should safeguard the hard-won positive momentum in their economic and trade relations, he added.
