Tianchi Lake: A natural wonder nurtured by conservation

The 2026 "A Date with China: Meet Xinjiang" international media tour visits Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on August 29, 2026. The scenic area brings together diverse natural landscapes, including alpine glaciers, wetland meadows, forest canyons, lakes and mountains, and Gobi deserts. Tianchi Lake itself is a moraine-dammed lake formed by ancient glacial movements. To safeguard this natural heritage, local authorities have stepped up ecological conservation and restoration efforts including grazing bans, returning grazing land to grassland, and wetland conservation. As a result, the grassland vegetation coverage rate in the area increased from 34 percent in 2012 to 90 percent in 2025. [Photo/chinadaily.com.cn]
