Wang calls for dialogue as Gulf situation hits critical juncture

China on Monday called on parties involved in the Middle East and Gulf conflicts to return to dialogue and make de-escalation their immediate priority, warning that the region has reached a critical juncture.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks in Beijing during talks with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

"The old script of recurring conflict must not be replayed, and a new chapter of stability and prosperity should be opened as soon as possible," Wang said.

China has always maintained that, no matter how serious the differences, a way forward should be found at the negotiating table rather than through the force of arms, he said.

Since steps have already been taken toward a ceasefire and an end to hostilities, there should be no turning back, Wang added.

He called on the parties concerned to respond positively to the international community's desire for peace, prioritize the well-being of people across the region and return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.

China is willing to strengthen coordination with Kuwait and continue contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the region, Wang said.

Jarrah praised China's constructive role in mediating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. He affirmed Kuwait's commitment to strengthen communication and coordination with China, help restore regional security and stability at an early date, and safeguard the freedom and security of international shipping lanes.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Kuwait. Kuwait was the first Gulf Arab country to establish diplomatic ties with China.

Wang called on the two sides to expand bilateral cooperation across various fields and deliver tangible benefits to their peoples.

Jarrah reiterated Kuwait's firm adherence to the one-China principle and expressed willingness to deepen practical cooperation with China in investment, energy, and multilateral affairs.

He also assured Wang that Kuwait attaches great importance to the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects within the country and will continue providing them with protection.
