China rejects US officials' social media claims against Chinese tech firms

China on Monday rejected accusations made by certain US officials against Chinese technology companies, describing the remarks as "blatant technological bullying and unilateral coercion".

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular news conference after some US officials claimed on social media that technologies supplied by Chinese companies could create risks involving espionage, cyberattacks and network disruptions.

The officials also called on US partners in the Western Hemisphere to switch to what they described as "trusted suppliers".

Expressing China's firm opposition, Lin said, "The remarks fabricate facts and distort the truth."

Chinese technology companies offer advanced technologies, competitive prices, and safe and efficient services, he said.

When operating overseas, the companies strictly observe local laws, regulations and industry standards. Their products and services have been widely recognized by local partners and communities, while contributing to economic and social development and job creation, Lin said.

"They are truly trustworthy suppliers," he added.

Lin said it is the United States that has long conducted surveillance, monitoring and cyberattacks in Latin America and the Caribbean, causing countries in the Americas to view it as a source of insecurity and an untrustworthy partner.

He urged Washington to stop political manipulation and interfering with sovereign countries' right to choose their own partners, and instead take concrete actions that contribute to the prosperity and stability of Latin America and the Caribbean.
