Death toll rises to 68 in Zimbabwe boat capsize accident

HARARE -- The death toll from the boat capsize accident at Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba has risen to 68 following the recovery of 22 more bodies on Saturday, the police have said.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police advised Zimbabweans and relevant stakeholders that the death toll in the Kariba RIDA boat accident is now 68 following the recovery of 22 bodies on Aug 15, 2026," police said in an update on their social media platform.

The boat, which was traveling from Kariba town to the Chalala Fishing Camp on Tuesday, was reportedly carrying 144 passengers, five crew members and an unconfirmed number of children.
