China urged Japan on Friday to abide by the post-war international order enshrined in the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and other international legal instruments, following Russia's President Vladimir Putin visiting Iturup Island, which is known as Etorofu Island in Japan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks when asked to comment on Putin's visit on Thursday to Iturup Island, the largest of the Southern Kuril Islands, which are known as the Northern Territories in Japan.

"China maintains that the outcomes of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War should be earnestly respected and upheld," Guo said. "China urges the Japanese side to abide by the postwar international order enshrined in the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and other international legal instruments."
