County in Jilin transforms saline land into crab, water bamboo farms

Ge's company now operates more than 4,300 hectares of aquaculture farms. Its crabs are sold in more than 20 cities across China, while its crayfish mainly go to markets in Shenyang and Beijing.
Ding Wei, a Zhejiang farmer, has spent nine years here trying to grow water bamboo on highly alkaline land. After eight difficult years, he worked with a local company to combine the crop with soil conditioners made partly from by-products of citric-acid production. The approach helps seedlings survive, reduces soil alkalinity, and produces a vegetable that can be sold commercially.
Across the county, paddy fields, crab ponds, and water-bamboo plots now flourish where crops once struggled to grow.
