China-born producer sets pace for new era of vertical micro-dramas
As vertical, short-form drama reshapes how global audiences watch stories — in bursts of 60 to 120 seconds, delivered straight to a phone screen — a producer from Kunming in Southwest China's Yunnan province is helping define what quality control looks like for this fast-growing format.
As the format continues to expand its reach, producers like Runyu (Martin) Li — working at the technical and cultural crossroads of the industry — are shaping how a new generation of short-form storytelling gets made, and who it ultimately reaches.
Li works as a Post Producer at ReelShort, the vertical-drama platform operated by Crazy Maple Studio, one of the companies at the center of the US micro-drama boom.
Li's role sits at the intersection of technical finishing, pipeline quality control and cross-cultural localization — work that determines whether a short-form series feels polished enough to hold a mobile audience's attention within just a few minutes.
Vertical micro-dramas are produced and completed at a pace with few precedents in traditional television. "Once a project finishes editing, sound, color, subtitles and visual effects often move forward at the same time," Li said, adding that subtitles matter more than people think. "Subtitles are actually very important, even though a lot of people don't think about them that way," he said.
Because English-language scripts are dense with idioms and slangs, the challenge is twofold: making sure the subtitles read naturally and match the actors' performances, while also ensuring that when those subtitles are translated again into other languages, the original meaning still comes through accurately.
Born and raised in Kunming, Li moved to the United States for college, enrolling at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and joining Studio 21 as a camera operator.
After graduating, Li moved to Los Angeles and joined the Crazy Maple Studio's ReelShort team as post producer for ReelShort shows like: I Accidentally Sexted My Enemy, which has drawn roughly 167 million views on the platform, and Miss You After Goodbye, with 172 million views, according to ReelShort platform data.
