The world's largest-diameter shield tunneling machine bores an underwater passage on Thursday. The tunnel, connecting Shanghai's Chongming Island and Taicang in neighboring Jiangsu province, is built to the highest construction standards for high-speed rail river-crossing projects in China. The machine successfully bored through the tunnel traversing the Yangtze River, which will allow high-speed trains to travel at a full speed of 350 kilometers per hour without having to slow down — a first for such a crossing.
